Dave Long Born in Kadoma, Zimbabwe, of South African and English stock it would be fair to say my formative years were carved out in the African bush. This led to an appreciation of all things natural and finding beauty in its strangest forms. After a spell as a hellraiser tearing up the racetracks of Southern Africa and UK in the pursuit of the Motor Racing dream I became resident in the UK, curtesey of a certain dictator. Though widowed in 1996 I have had the privilege to raise our two fine young sons and pursue my passions for art, photography, salsa dance and playing cricket. Sadly for those of you that were hoping for a picture of me I have to disappoint you. Why do you think I stand behind the camera? A similar creation to the one on the right can be commissioned to your specification. Barbara May Long (1926 -1998) Born into the Armstrong family in Stockport, she was often referred to within the family as the reason for the General strike in 1926. "Babs" always had a latent artistic talent, probably inherited from her father Raymond, that only surfaced in maturity. Emigrating to Rhodesia in 1955 it was there that she began to paint after raising 3 children. Though equally adept with figures or landscapes it was her tribal sketches of everyday african life which drew most attention. She became a familiar face on the Zimbabwe scene until her return to the UK in 1991 where she continued her work until her death in March 1998. (Unfortunately much of her work remains undocumented so if you are in possession of signed B.M.Long work, we would like to hear from you.) |
